Hugues BERSINI is a full Professor at the Free University of Brussels (ULB) and serves as Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence (IRIDIA) at ULB. Elected as a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium on May 29, 2009, he is a prominent figure in the field of artificial intelligence and complex systems research. With a background as a Civil Engineer and Doctor of Applied Sciences, BERSINI has established himself as a leading academic in Belgium's scientific community. His educational foundation supports his extensive work in computational systems and interdisciplinary research. BERSINI's research focuses on artificial intelligence, complex systems, and information technology applications. His work explores how technological solutions can address ecological, economic, and societal challenges through virtualization of information, connected systems, and predictive algorithms. He has examined the societal implications of AI, including privacy concerns and the potential for automated management of public goods. As co-director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research and Development in Artificial Intelligence at ULB, BERSINI leads significant research initiatives that bridge theoretical computer science with practical applications in commercial and medical sectors. His laboratory has produced notable researchers, with one member receiving the prestigious Marie Curie Prize for best European researcher. BERSINI has authored eight books and more than 300 publications on information technology and complex systems. His book "Big Brother is driving you," published by the Royal Academy of Belgium, examines the societal implications of increasingly automated systems and the trade-offs between security and privacy. He actively contributes to public discourse on technology through media appearances, including participation in the Academy Tournaments program where he represented the "Hope" team on artificial intelligence topics, and various public sessions of the Technology and Society Class at the Royal Academy of Belgium.
