Vitaliy Popov is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School, with a courtesy appointment at the University of Michigan School of Information. He also serves as Director of Learning Sciences and Technology for the Clinical Simulation Center of the University of Michigan Medical School. His research focuses on optimizing team function in healthcare to improve learning, performance, and patient outcomes, leveraging learning analytics, simulation-based training, and extended reality (XR). He holds a Ph.D. in computer-supported collaborative learning from Wageningen University & Research Center, Netherlands. Research interests span Learning Sciences, Health Sciences, Artificial Intelligence, and eXtended Reality. Current projects include NSF-funded initiatives on multimodal learning analytics in VR teamwork and visual attention mechanisms in surgical teams. He co-leads the SI 582 Interaction Design course at U-M School of Information and contributes to editorial boards of Annals of Medicine - Medical Education and International Journal of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning . Recent work explores AI applications in surgical learning, shared decision-making in healthcare teams, and metaverse innovations in medical education. His research bridges education science, healthcare technology, and human-computer interaction, with a focus on interprofessional collaboration and technology-enhanced learning environments.
