Jordi Arbiol is an ICREA Research Professor leading the Group of Advanced Electron Nanoscopy (GAeN) at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) under the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST). He holds academic leadership roles, including President of the Spanish Microscopy Society (2017–2021) and membership in the International Federation of Societies for Microscopy (IFSM) Executive Board. His research focuses on advanced electron microscopy techniques for nanoscale materials analysis, including atomic-scale structural characterization and in-situ observations of material behavior. Arbiol earned his B.Sc. (1997) and Ph.D. (2001) in Physics from the Universitat de Barcelona, where he also served as Assistant Professor. His expertise includes transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron tomography, and nanometrology. He has pioneered methodologies for correlating atomic-scale structure with functional properties in nanomaterials, particularly in semiconductor and oxide nanostructures. His scientific contributions span nanowire growth mechanisms, polarity-driven synthesis, and plasmonic/phononic phenomena in nanosystems. He has authored over 500 publications, achieving an h-index of 107. Awards include the EU40 Materials Prize (2014) and FWO Commemorative Medal (2021). Education: Ph.D. in Physics (2001), Universitat de Barcelona B.Sc. in Physics (1997), Universitat de Barcelona Affiliations: ICREA Research Professor, ICN2/BIST (2015–present) Scientific Supervisor of Electron Microscopy Facilities at ICN2 and BIST His research group develops cutting-edge techniques for atomic-resolution imaging, including single-atom recognition and in-situ TEM for energy-related phenomena. Current projects explore nanosystems for quantum computing, photonics, and energy applications. Awards: FWO Commemorative Medal (2021) BIST IGNITE Award (2018) EU40 Materials Prize (2014) Top 40 under 40 Analytical Scientist (2014) Grants and Roles: Has advised over 90 peer reviews for journals like Nano Letters and Nature . He coordinates the Joint Electron Microscopy Center at ALBA Synchrotron (JEMCA) and serves as an expert advisor for agencies including the European Research Council (ERC) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
