Julián Zapata is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Toronto. He holds a PhD in Translation Studies from the University of Ottawa. His research focuses on translation technologies, human-computer interaction in translation, and innovative teaching methods for translator training. He has taught translation courses in multiple languages and institutions across Canada, including part-time roles at Université du Québec en Outaouais and Concordia University. Dr. Zapata’s work emphasizes the integration of speech technologies, ergonomic tools, and AI systems into translation workflows, supported by grants from the SSHRC and Fonds de recherche du Québec. Research interests include translation process optimization, post-editing techniques, and the application of voice recognition systems in translation practice. He explores how emerging technologies enhance translator efficiency and well-being, advocating for interactive dictation as a transformative method in both industry and academia. His global contributions span over 25 countries through presentations and publications. Key themes in his work address the future of speech technologies, challenges in legal translation post-editing, and the ethical use of AI in translation.
