Dr. Raju Sapkota serves as a Senior Research Fellow at Anglia Ruskin University's Vision and Eye Research Institute within the School of Medicine (Faculty of Health, Medicine and Social Care). His academic foundation includes a PhD from Anglia Ruskin University (2010), MSc in Investigative Ophthalmology and Vision Science from the University of Manchester (2006), and Bachelor in Optometry from Tribhuvan University, Nepal (2002). His research expertise centers on diabetes and diabetic retinopathy in Asian populations, visual short-term memory as a biomarker for cognitive decline, and visual function in age-related macular degeneration. Key research areas include: Risk factors and interventions for diabetes in South Asians and Chinese patients Efficacy of paper-based visual function tests for home monitoring Barriers to diabetic awareness among South Asians in the UK Ocular complications of UV and blue light exposure Use of visual short-term memory tests for early dementia screening Dr. Sapkota's publication portfolio demonstrates consistent contributions to high-impact journals across ophthalmology, public health, and cognitive neuroscience. Recent work shows increasing focus on ethnic health disparities in diabetes management, pandemic-related healthcare disruptions, and translational applications of visual cognition research. His collaborative approach spans institutions in the UK, Nepal, India, China, and Thailand. Scientific recognition includes: Anglia Ruskin University VC’s award for Outstanding Research Impact and Innovation (team, 2020) Best paper presentation award at Anglia Ruskin University research conference (2010) As a research supervisor, Dr. Sapkota has completed one PhD project ( Effect of environmental stress on diabetic cornea ) and currently co-supervises another ( Visual short-term memory binding as a screening tool for early cognitive decline in dementia ). He has mentored over a dozen research interns, generating multiple collaborative publications. His grant portfolio demonstrates consistent funding success, including ARU Health grants (2022), Global Challenge Research Fund (2018), and multiple university-level studentships and travel awards since 2008. Working within the Vision and Eye Research Institute, Dr. Sapkota contributes to interdisciplinary teams addressing vision science challenges through collaborations with the British Congress of Optometry, Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and international healthcare systems.
