Kristina Teär Fahnehjelm is an Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet (2023-2027). She serves as a paediatric ophthalmologist at St. Erik Eye Hospital in Stockholm, course director for the Ophthalmology Course at KI, and represents St. Erik’s in ERN EYE. She is also a member of the National Board of ROP. 1985: MD from Karolinska Institutet 2003: PhD in Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology (KI) 2009: Appointed Associate Professor (KI) 2011-2013: European Leadership Development Programme 2015: Adjunct Professor at Gothenburg University 2018-2020: Adjunct Lecturer at KI Her research focuses on pediatric ocular malformations (optic disc hypoplasia, coloboma, microphthalmia/anophthalmia), inherited metabolic disorders (mucopolysaccharidosis, Alagille, LCHAD-deficiency), and patient safety. She investigates the interplay between genetic factors and visual development, with a strong emphasis on OCT imaging, neurodevelopmental outcomes, and quality of life in affected children. Scientific awards include the Marianne Bernadotte Prize in Pediatric Ophthalmology (2020). Her recent publications address retinal hemorrhages in abusive head trauma, genetic heterogeneity in optic nerve hypoplasia, and ocular manifestations in rare diseases like Fabry and Alagille syndromes. She actively collaborates with Tony Pansell's Eye movements and vision research group.
