Associate Professor Sally K. May is an ARC Future Fellow and Associate Head of Research in the School of Humanities at the University of Adelaide. Her work bridges archaeology and anthropology, focusing on relationships between Indigenous communities, landscapes, and material culture in northern Australia. She leads the 'Art at a Crossroads' project (2021–2024) and holds an ARC Future Fellowship exploring western Arnhem Land rock painters (2022–2026). Her research highlights contact-period rock art, colonial encounters, and Indigenous sovereignty, with key publications like Karrikadjurren (2023) and Collecting Cultures (2009). Sally collaborates with the Creative and Cultural Signature Research Theme, shaping research initiatives at the University of Adelaide. Her grants include two ARC-funded projects, and she supervises postgraduate research in curatorial studies and museum practice. Awards include the 2021 Chief Minister's Northern Territory History Book Award for The Bible in Buffalo Country (co-authored). Sally’s fieldwork spans over 20 years in Arnhem Land, with notable contributions to understanding Maliwawa figures, pigment adoption, and artist biographies like Nayombolmi and Djimongurr. She emphasizes ethical engagement with Indigenous communities and innovative methods like 3D rock art modeling.
