Professor Charles Burdett serves as Director of the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies and Professor in Italian Studies at the School of Advanced Study, University of London. He also holds the position of Branch Director for Bilingualism Matters London. Currently on research leave, Professor Burdett has established himself as a leading scholar in transnational approaches to Modern Languages with particular expertise in Italian cultural studies. His research spans literary culture under Fascism, Italian colonial presence in Libya and East Africa, theories of intercultural contact, and representations of Islam in Italian literature. Professor Burdett's work consistently explores how cultural translation shapes disciplinary frameworks in Modern Languages, with a strong emphasis on transnational perspectives that challenge traditional national boundaries in language studies. His research reveals the complex ways in which colonial legacies continue to influence contemporary Italian identity and cultural production. His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on the evolving relationship between Italy and the Islamic world, the legacies of Italian imperialism, and the critical importance of cultural context in language education. Professor Burdett's work shows a clear trajectory from historical analysis of Fascist-era travel writing toward contemporary applications of transnational theory in language education and policy. As Principal Investigator of the £2m AHRC project 'Transnationalizing Modern Languages' (2014-2017), Professor Burdett has secured significant research funding that has directly influenced national language education policy. His current AHRC Impact and Engagement Fellowship, 'Uncovering the Afterlife of the Italian Empire' (2023-25), continues this trajectory of impactful research with real-world applications. Professor Burdett actively supervises PhD students on topics related to transnational Italian studies, diaspora representations, and philosophical approaches to memory and identity. His leadership extends to editorial roles including Co-General Editor of the Journal of Romance Studies, demonstrating his commitment to advancing scholarly discourse in his field.
