Bryson W. Katona, MD/PhD , is the Jeffery and Cynthia King Associate Professor of Lynch Syndrome Research at the University of Pennsylvania. He serves as Director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Genetics Program, Gastrointestinal Cancer Risk Evaluation Program, and Lynch Syndrome Program at Penn Medicine. He is a member of the Abramson Cancer Center, Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics, and Center for Molecular Studies in Digestive and Liver Diseases. Education: BA/MS in Chemistry (University of Pennsylvania, 2002), MD/PhD in Biochemistry (Washington University in St. Louis, 2009) Training: Internal Medicine Residency (2009–2011), Gastroenterology Fellowship (2011–2015) His research focuses on hereditary gastrointestinal cancers and polyposis syndromes, with an emphasis on Lynch syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis, and BRCA-related pancreatic cancer risks. His work spans genetic risk assessment , surveillance protocols , and early detection biomarkers , particularly for colorectal, gastric, and pancreatic malignancies. Recent publications highlight advancements in pancreatic cancer screening for Li-Fraumeni and BRCA mutation carriers, colorectal cancer blood tests using circulating tumor DNA, and global impact studies of genetic syndromes on gastrointestinal disease. His collaborations include the Collaborative Group of the Americas on Inherited Gastrointestinal Cancer and Hereditary Breast Cancer Clinical Study Group .
