Olli Ikkala is a Senior Advisor at the Department of Applied Physics, Aalto University, with a distinguished career spanning decades. He earned his Doctoral and Master's degrees in Engineering and Technology from Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University) in 1983 and 1977, respectively. His research focuses on Self-Assembly , Hydrogels , and Nanoclusters , advancing life-inspired soft matter, electrocatalytic materials, and mechanically adaptive systems. His work contributes to sustainable materials, biomedical applications, and energy technologies. Key projects include Dyna-Mat: Life-Inspired Soft Matter (EU Horizon Europe ERC), GeneCellNano for chronic disease therapies, and LIBER for nanocluster-based energy solutions. His publications and 19 active/funded projects reflect interdisciplinary collaborations in material science, chemistry, and biomedical engineering. Scientific awards include two Academy Professor appointments (2005-2010, 2012-2016), Alexander von Humboldt Research Award (2019), and Center of Excellency (2014-2019). He has delivered 43 invited talks and 18 plenary/keynote lectures, emphasizing sustainable and adaptive materials.
