Cav. Professor Sandro Macchietto holds the position of Professor of Process Systems Engineering at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Imperial College London. He is an internationally recognized expert in process systems engineering, sustainable energy systems, and industrial biotechnology. His research focuses on modeling, simulation, and optimization of industrial processes with applications in energy efficiency, heat exchanger networks, and fouling mitigation. He has led initiatives such as the Interdisciplinary Centre for Process Systems Engineering (CPSE), the Energy Futures Lab, and pioneered Imperial’s MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures. Professor Macchietto has co-founded two companies: Process Systems Enterprise (acquired by Siemens) and Hexxcell Ltd., specializing in process simulation and heat transfer software. He advises on technology transfer and enterprise strategies, including increasing DeepTech startups at Imperial by 4x. His advisory roles include memberships in the Scientific Committee of Institut Mines Telecom (Paris), EU ERC panels, and Strategic Advisor to Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute (China). His research interests span thermal systems optimization, fouling dynamics in heat exchangers, and interdisciplinary energy solutions. Recent work emphasizes renewable energy systems integration, refinery preheat train optimization, and fouling prediction in dairy and oil industries. Articles highlight advancements in solar power network modeling, stochastic sandstorm impact analysis, and waste heat recovery strategies. Professor Macchietto has received prestigious awards including the McRobert Award for innovation, Queen’s Awards for Excellence and Enterprise, and the IChemE Sargent Medal. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Institution of Chemical Engineers, and was honored as Cavaliere of Italy’s Order of Merit.
