Daniel M. Mittleman is a Professor of Engineering at Brown University's School of Engineering. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley, and previously held a faculty position at Rice University's ECE Department before joining Brown in 2015. Education: B.S. in Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1988) M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics, University of California, Berkeley (1990, 1994) Research interests span the science and technology of terahertz radiation, including: Terahertz wireless communications for future networks above 100 GHz Spectroscopic studies of condensed matter systems and complex materials Development of near-field probes for sub-wavelength imaging Device concepts for modulation, multiplexing, and beam steering in THz systems His work on terahertz wireless systems focuses on channel properties, security against eavesdropping, and physical layer components. Recent terahertz spectroscopy includes pressure-dependent studies and analysis of vibrational modes in soft matter systems. Antenna and metasurface research explores novel designs for wavefront engineering and secure communication. Scientific awards include Fellowships from the Optical Society of America, IEEE, and the American Physical Society. Students and collaborators include Ph.D. candidates Zhaoji Fang, Pingchuan Ma, and Chloe Stults, as well as postdoctoral fellows Johanna Kölbel and Kevin Mutai. He teaches courses such as ENGN 0030 - Introduction to Engineering and ENGN 1730 - Lasers and Nonlinear Optics .
