Wei Qiu is Professor and Department Head in the Department of Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Memorial University of Newfoundland. He holds a B.Eng. and M.A.Sc. from Dalian University of Technology and a PhD in marine hydrodynamics from Dalhousie University. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) and an active researcher and leader in marine and offshore engineering. Education: B.Eng. in Naval Architecture, Dalian University of Technology M.A.Sc. in Ship Structural Mechanics, Dalian University of Technology PhD in Marine Hydrodynamics, Dalhousie University Dr. Qiu's research focuses on marine hydrodynamics and its applications to ships and offshore structures. He specializes in fluid-structure interaction using both experimental and numerical methods, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and potential-flow-based approaches. His work addresses critical challenges such as wave/body interaction, deepwater platform hydrodynamics, mooring line dynamics, slamming, propeller vortex flow, vortex-induced vibration of marine risers, and ship hull-form optimization. His research is highly applied, with strong collaborations across the marine industry, government agencies, and private sectors. Dr. Qiu leads a large NSERC CREATE Program on Offshore Technology Research and has developed several software packages adopted by industry. He holds patents and has published extensively in refereed journals and conference proceedings. His leadership extends to professional societies: he is a Fellow of SNAME and RINA, serves as Regional Vice President (Atlantic North) of SNAME, chaired the 34th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering (OMAE) in 2015, and is Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering. He has also served as Chair of the ITTC Ocean Engineering Committee and on the Specialist Committee on Power Performance Prediction. Scientific Awards and Honors: Fellow of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (FSNAME) Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (FRINA) NSERC CREATE Program on Offshore Technology Research Dr. Qiu has supervised numerous students and mentored early-career researchers through his research programs and leadership roles. His research is supported by major grants, including the NSERC CREATE grant, and industry partnerships. He leads a research team focused on advancing offshore and marine technologies through innovation in hydrodynamics and structural performance. Dr. Qiu leads a research group at Memorial University that integrates experimental, numerical, and software development efforts in marine hydrodynamics. His team collaborates with industry on practical applications and contributes to international standards through involvement in ITTC and OMAE. The group is a key player in training the next generation of ocean engineers through the NSERC CREATE program.
