Professor Matteo Palma holds the position of Professor of Physical Chemistry and Nanomaterials at Queen Mary University of London since 2022, leading the Palma Group in the Department of Chemistry. He previously served as Reader (2018–2022), Senior Lecturer (2017–2018), and Lecturer (2013–2017). His research focuses on controlled assembly of nanomaterials into functional heterostructures, with applications in biosensing, optoelectronics, and single-molecule studies. He obtained his PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Strasbourg (2007) and completed his MSc and BSc at the University of Rome La Sapienza (2004). Research interests include nanomaterials, nanobiotechnology, and DNA-based self-assembly. His group employs carbon nanotubes, 2D materials, and DNA origami to create low-dimensional hybrid systems. Key projects involve biosensor development, optoelectronic devices, and mechanosensitive bioelectronic interfaces. Grants include funding from the Ministry of Defence (£249,998), Defence Science and Technology Lab (£226,848), and Innovate UK (£230,941), among others. He has supervised multiple PhD students and postdocs, contributing to over 100 peer-reviewed publications. Awards include the European Materials Research Society Young Scientist Award (2007).
