Xinyu Zhang is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), holding the Ericsson Endowed Chair in Wireless Communication Access Techniques. He previously served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2012–2017) and earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2012. His research focuses on wireless networking, mobile computing, and IoT systems, with an emphasis on mmWave communication, computational sensing, and system implementation. Key research areas include millimeter-wave networking, visible light sensing, RFID-based systems, and securing wireless communication. Notable contributions include the M-Cube millimeter-wave MIMO software radio and the NeuroRadar low-power IoT sensor. Zhang has received prestigious awards such as the NSF CAREER Award (2014), ACM MobiCom Best Paper Award (2011), and the SenSys 2023 Best Paper Award for NeuroRadar. He leads the Scalable Distributed MIMO project and collaborates on hardware/software platforms like M-Cube and RoS. His work spans theoretical models (e.g., signal processing, machine learning) and practical implementations across diverse domains, including healthcare, automotive radar, and privacy-aware systems. Zhang actively mentors students and has advised numerous graduates now in academia and industry. Current projects include leveraging metasurfaces for mmWave communication, AI-driven wireless systems, and securing IoT devices. His lab is part of UCSD’s Center for Wireless Communications, emphasizing interdisciplinary innovation in wireless technologies.
