Ann Magnuson is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala University, specializing in Biophysical and Bioinorganic Chemistry. She serves as the director of studies for PhD studies at the Department of Chemistry - Ångström and is the vice chair of the Swedish Consortium for Artificial Photosynthesis since 2021. Dr. Magnuson's educational background includes a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Lund University (1998), followed by post-doctoral studies at the University of California, Davis and Michigan State University. She began her academic career as an assistant professor at Lund University, where she worked on biomimetic manganese complexes for water oxidation. In 2004, she moved to Uppsala University to initiate research on the bioenergetics of heterocystous cyanobacteria. Her research primarily focuses on photosynthesis, redox tuning in electron transfer proteins, and artificial photosynthesis for energy production. She has extensive experience with EPR spectroscopy coupled to laser flash photolysis to investigate electron transfer reactions in various systems. Her work spans natural and artificial photosynthetic systems, hydrogenase enzymes, and synthetic donor-acceptor assemblies for solar fuel production. She has made significant contributions to understanding electron transfer in photosynthesis and hydrogenase enzymes since joining the Swedish Consortium for Artificial Photosynthesis in 1995. Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong trajectory in understanding the molecular mechanisms of photosynthesis and hydrogen metabolism. Her work spans from fundamental studies of electron transfer in Photosystem II and hydrogenases to applied research on artificial photosynthetic systems for solar fuel production. The publications demonstrate increasing sophistication in techniques, from traditional biochemical approaches to advanced spectroscopic and computational methods, with a consistent focus on bioinspired energy solutions. Member of the Swedish Consortium for Artificial Photosynthesis since 1995 Vice-chair of the Swedish Consortium for Artificial Photosynthesis since 2021 Executive board member of SUNERGY since 2020 Expert reviewer for U.S. Department of Energy, Swedish Energy Agency, and European Commission Dr. Magnuson has supervised numerous PhD and Master's students in the areas of photosynthesis, bioinorganic chemistry, and renewable energy. Her research has been supported by multiple grants from Swedish and European funding agencies, particularly for projects related to artificial photosynthesis and solar fuel production. She was actively involved in the EU-funded SUNRISE project (2019-2020) and now leads efforts through SUNERGY's SUNER-C project, which secured European Commission funding in 2022 for developing large-scale European initiatives on solar fuels and chemicals. She leads the Molecular Biomimetics research group at Uppsala University, which focuses on developing biomimetic systems for energy conversion. Her laboratory employs a range of advanced spectroscopic and biochemical techniques, including EPR spectroscopy coupled with laser flash photolysis, to study electron transfer processes in natural photosynthetic systems and artificial constructs designed for solar fuel production.
