Zvi M. Kedem is a Professor of Computer Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University (NYU), and former Chair of the Department of Computer Science. He holds a D.Sc. in Mathematics from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (1974), with earlier degrees from the same institution. His research focuses on algorithmic techniques, computer graphics, database systems, data mining, parallel computing, and quantum physics. He has authored/co-authored over 100 publications and advised over 15 doctoral students, with 200+ academic descendants.
Research interests span:
- Design of computer-based systems
- Database optimization and knowledge-based systems
- Parallel and distributed computing architectures
- Quantum computing methodologies
Notable awards include Fellowships from ACM, EurASc, and IEEE, alongside the 2012 ACM Outstanding Contribution Award for his editorial leadership in the Computing Classification System. His advisory work includes guiding students at NYU, Columbia, MIT, and other institutions, many of whom hold leadership roles in academia and industry.
Professional service includes roles on funding panels, journal editorial boards, and program committees for major conferences. His legacy includes pioneering contributions to graphics algorithms and distributed systems, with descendants spanning academia and tech giants like Google and Microsoft.
