Professor Zoltan Takats is a Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Imperial College London's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction. He leads the Zoltan Takats Group and holds affiliations with multiple research centers including the CRUK Convergence Science Centre, Cancer Technology Network, and UK Dementia Research Institute. His work spans analytical chemistry, clinical diagnostics, and oncology, with a focus on mass spectrometry innovations like Ambient Mass Spectrometry and the REIMS technology. He has pioneered six mass spectrometric ionization techniques and founded companies Prosolia Inc, Medimass Ltd, and Massprom Ltd.
Education: PhD from Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary), postdoc at Purdue University (USA), followed by roles as Director of Cell Screen Research Centre and Head of Newborn Screening at Semmelweis University. He received a European Research Council Starting Grant in 2008 and became a Junior Research Group Leader at Justus Liebig University before joining Imperial in 2012.
Research interests include ambient mass spectrometry applications in cancer diagnosis, wound analysis, and real-time surgical pathology. His innovations enable rapid tissue analysis during surgery and non-invasive diagnostics. Key awards include the Mattauch-Herzog Award and Hungarian Star Award for innovation.
- Key Technologies: REIMS, MALDI imaging, laser desorption mass spectrometry
- Clinical Focus: Oncology, metabolic profiling, wound healing
- Recent Work: Biomarker detection in viral infections, tumor heterogeneity analysis, and robotics-integrated diagnostics
His 78+ publications and 6 patented techniques highlight contributions to analytical science and clinical translation.
