Dr. Zoe John is a Lecturer in Criminology at Swansea University's Department of Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy, within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She joined Swansea in 2021 and specializes in gender relations, embodiment, and sporting violence. Prior to this role, she conducted doctoral research at Cardiff University on gender, violence, and embodiment in mixed martial arts (MMA). Her work explores intersections of gender, vulnerability, and social inequality through creative methodologies like poetry-based data analysis.
Her teaching focuses on undergraduate modules at levels 4 and 5, covering key sociological theories and gender studies. She currently supervises two PhD students: one examining disciplinary disparities in English secondary schools and another analyzing gender-based violence frameworks in post-Soviet countries.
Zoe’s research interests include creative research methods, the sociology of sport, and the normalization of violence in everyday interactions. Her recent publications address themes such as gendered embodiment in MMA and qualitative researcher vulnerability. She holds an Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
