Zoe Chouliara serves as Associate Professor in Counselling, Transformation & Professional Practice at Edinburgh Napier University's School of Health and Social Care. Her research spans mental health, trauma therapy, and psychodermatology with significant contributions to suicide prevention frameworks and interpersonal trauma recovery.
Her research interests focus on relational approaches to trauma therapy, where she develops frameworks for therapeutic change in group settings addressing complex interpersonal trauma. She examines suicide risk factors in emergency healthcare, identifying emerging socioeconomic determinants while advancing protective factor analysis. In psychodermatology, she investigates appearance distress as an overlooked clinical parameter, advocating for biopsychosocial itch management approaches.
Analysis of her publication trends reveals strong emphasis on qualitative methodologies (particularly interpretative phenomenological analysis) applied to trauma recovery, with growing focus on cross-cultural applications as evidenced by her work on child sexual abuse recovery frameworks in India. Her research consistently bridges clinical practice and theoretical development.
As academic supervisor, she has mentored doctoral candidates including Wendy McInally (melanoma patient experiences), Gwenne McIntosh (male Alzheimer's caregivers), and Gail Norris (high-risk childbirth perceptions).
Her clinical collaborations include partnerships with the Gender-based Violence unit of the Scottish Government, demonstrating applied research impact in public health policy development.
