Zoe Childerley is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton's School of Art and Media, affiliated with the Photography Research Excellence Group and the Centre for Design History. Her practice-based research explores rural experiences, cultural identity, and the relationship between landscape and society, with a focus on the UK borders and the concept of wilderness. She interrogates the photographic medium's narrative and abstract capacities, often blending sound, drawing, and text into her work.
Her research interests include the sublime in landscape, nationhood, and the deconstruction of place. Notable projects like 'The Debatable Lands' (2016) delve into Northumberland's politics and local culture, while 'Dinosaur Dust' (2020) examines desert landscapes through documentary and artist residencies. Recent exhibitions such as 'Stranger Than Fiction' (2024) reflect her exploration of curation and social narratives.
Zoe's work frequently addresses themes of statehood, borderlands, and cultural identity, as seen in her 2018 'Beyond the Pale' series, which engaged with the Anglo-Scottish Border and mixed media. Her research spans 2014–2024, with outputs across exhibitions, books, and artist publications.
Her research groups include the Photography Research Excellence Group and the Centre for Design History, where she collaborates on projects interrogating visual arts in rural communities. Supervised work includes one documented project, though specific student names are not listed here.
