Ziv Katalan serves as Adjunct Professor in the Operations, Information and Decisions department at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Managing Director for Wharton Global Initiatives. He holds a PhD in Management Science/Operations Research from Columbia University (1995) and a BS in Mathematics from Tel-Aviv University (1987).

Dr. Katalan's research focuses on optimizing production and service systems through operations research methodologies, specifically examining resource allocation dynamics, scheduling under uncertainty, and manufacturing performance impacts of product variety expansion. His work bridges theoretical modeling with practical applications in supply chain and service operations management.
His publications (1994-2005) in Operations Research, Management Science, and Queueing Systems reveal consistent themes: stochastic modeling of production-inventory systems, economic lot scheduling under demand variability, and queueing network analysis for multi-class service systems. A significant portion addresses base-stock policy optimization across rental fleets, manufacturing lines, and polling systems.
