Zi-Kui Liu is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Pennsylvania State University and Director of the Phases Research Laboratory. He obtained his BS (Central South University), MS (University of Science and Technology Beijing), and PhD (Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden) in materials-related fields.
- PhD in Physical Metallurgy, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden
- MS in Materials Engineering, University of Science and Technology Beijing, China
- BS in Metallurgy, Central South University, China
Dr. Liu’s research focuses on integrating first-principles calculations, machine learning, and thermodynamic/kinetic modeling to predict material properties and design novel materials. His team developed the zentropy theory and derived general flux equations for cross-phenomenon coefficients.
He has graduated 31 PhD students, co-founded the NSF Center for Computational Materials Design, and authored over 600+ publications. His leadership roles include Editor-in-Chief of CALPHAD (since 2001) and President of CALPHAD, Inc. (since 2013).
- Received 18+ major awards from TMS, ASM International, Penn State, and Chinese institutions
- Co-developed YPHON phonon code for polar materials
- Founded Materials Genome Foundation (2018) and owns trademark for 'Materials Genome®'
Dr. Liu is associated with Penn State’s Intercollege Graduate Degree Program (IGDP) in Materials Science and Engineering, emphasizing cross-disciplinary collaboration.
