Zhu Mao is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical & Materials Engineering Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), where he has been since 2021. Previously, he served as faculty at the University of Massachusetts Lowell's Mechanical Engineering Department from 2015. His research focuses on dynamics and vibration, intelligent systems, noncontact sensing, computer vision, signal processing, and uncertainty quantification, with applications in structural health monitoring and energy systems.
Education: Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California San Diego (2012), M.S. (2008), and B.S. from Tsinghua University (2002).
Research interests include condition-based monitoring for wind turbines and lithium-ion batteries, leveraging vibration-based diagnostics and machine learning. He has published over 120 papers, with notable contributions to journals like Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing. His work is funded by agencies like NSF, DoD, and DOE.
Professional roles include Chair of the Technical Division on Model Validation at the Society for Experimental Mechanics, and Editorial Board member of Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing. Awards include the AFOSR YIP Award (2018), IEEE James W. Dally Young Investigator Award (2023), and multiple best paper recognitions.
Teaching encompasses undergraduate and graduate courses in mechanical engineering, with a focus on integrating research into education.
