Dr. Zhongwei Chen is an Associate Professor at the University of Queensland's School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering. He leads interdisciplinary research focusing on three primary areas: Mining Geomechanics (ground support design, high-stress excavation stability, rock weathering), Reservoir Geomechanics (unconventional gas recovery, carbon sequestration, underground hydrogen storage), and Machine Learning Applications for geomaterial analysis and subsurface characterization. He directs a NATA-accredited Geomechanics Lab with capabilities including rock strength testing, multiphase flow visualization, and acoustic emission analysis.
His research integrates experimental and computational approaches to address challenges in geo-energy extraction. Recent publications (2022-2025) demonstrate strong emphasis on:
- Coal permeability evolution under chemical/mechanical stress
- Machine learning for geotechnical property prediction
- Hydraulic fracture propagation in anisotropic formations
- Underground hydrogen storage mechanics
- Environmental impacts of mining operations
