Zhisheng Yan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Science and Technology at George Mason University's School of Computing. He leads the Mason immErsive meDia computIng and Applications Lab (MEDIA Lab). Previously, he held an Assistant Professor position at Georgia State University and was a visiting researcher at Stanford University's Department of Electrical Engineering. He earned his PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo (2017).
His research focuses on systems and security challenges in immersive computing systems, including VR/AR, imaging, and video systems. Key areas include latency reduction, cybersecurity, edge computing optimizations, and user authentication mechanisms. His work addresses real-world applications such as automated driving safety, medical training, and energy-efficient display technologies.
Yan's research has garnered significant recognition, including the NSF CRII Award, ACM SIGMM Best PhD Thesis Award, and IEEE HealthCom’14 Best Student Paper Runner-up. His publications span topics like neural-enhanced video streaming, non-line-of-sight detection for autonomous vehicles, and privacy-preserving techniques in immersive environments.
He actively participates in academic leadership roles, including co-directing the MS INFS Program at George Mason. His interdisciplinary approach integrates computer science, cybersecurity, and human-centered design to advance immersive technologies.
