Zhichun Jing is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts. His research focuses on the archaeology of Shang civilization, early urbanism, environmental archaeology, and archaeological ceramics. He has conducted fieldwork in China, Greece, and the United States, with a current emphasis on the Anyang region, collaborating with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Dr. Jing holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Minnesota (1994). His work has been supported by numerous grants, including funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, National Science Foundation, and various international foundations. He has authored/co-edited influential publications such as Shang Dynasty and Early Chinese Civilization – Multiple Perspectives (2008) and contributed to major archaeological reports like Excavations in Eastern Henan (2017).
His research interests span indigenous knowledge systems, environmental interactions, ritual practices, and quantitative methodologies. He has received prestigious awards including the Golden Cauldron Award (2018) and the Canada Research Chair in Asia-Pacific Archaeology (2002, renewed 2007). He actively supervises graduate students in Chinese archaeology, early complex societies, and ancient technologies.
