Zhengyu Liu is the Max Thomas Professor of Climate Dynamics and Director of the Atmospheric Sciences Program at The Ohio State University's Department of Geography, College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on climate system modeling, ocean-atmosphere-land interactions, and climate variability across timescales. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from MIT (1991), an M.S. in Dynamic Meteorology from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1985), and a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Nanjing Institute of Meteorology (1982).
Research interests include climate change, paleoclimate, Earth systems modeling, and the dynamics of ocean circulation. He investigates climate variability from seasonal to interdecadal scales and models glacial/interglacial transitions. His work addresses topics like Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, monsoon dynamics, and hydroclimate evolution.
Teaching includes graduate courses on dynamic meteorology, data assimilation, and global warming. He has authored over 200 publications, focusing on climate modeling, paleoclimate reconstructions, and climate feedback mechanisms. Current projects explore deglacial hydroclimate changes, ocean circulation shifts, and the Holocene temperature conundrum.
