Zheng Sun, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at Baylor College of Medicine with dual appointments in the Department of Medicine (Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism) and the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. He holds additional memberships in the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, Gulf Coast Center for Precision Environmental Health, Huffington Center on Aging, and Texas Medical Center Digestive Diseases Center.
Dr. Sun earned his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in Tucson and completed post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
His research centers on epigenomic regulation of energy metabolism and neurocognition through environmental factors including physical exercise, diet, endocrine factors, and the circadian clock. Dr. Sun explores hormesis—the beneficial effects of low-dose stressors like reactive oxygen species, chemical toxins, calorie restriction, and physical exercise. His laboratory employs advanced techniques including multi-omics approaches, optogenetics, chemogenetics, single-cell analysis, genome editing, and neurobehavioral testing.
Analysis of Dr. Sun's publication history reveals a cohesive research trajectory focused on circadian biology, epigenetic regulation, and metabolic disorders. His work bridges neuroscience and endocrinology, particularly examining how nuclear receptor signaling pathways (especially Rev-erb and HDAC3) regulate metabolic processes across tissues. A significant portion of his research investigates the molecular mechanisms linking circadian rhythms to metabolic diseases, neurocognitive function, and aging-related disorders.

As Principal Investigator of the Zheng Sun Lab, he leads research investigating how environmental factors shape epigenomic landscapes to influence metabolism and cognition. His work has important implications for understanding and treating metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and age-related conditions through precision medicine approaches.
