Zhen Liu is an Associate Professor in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Minnesota, where they conduct research in theoretical particle physics with a focus on high energy collider phenomenology. Their work spans Standard Model physics, Beyond Standard Model physics, and innovative experimental approaches to detect exotic particles.
Dr. Liu's research interests encompass a broad spectrum of theoretical particle physics, with particular emphasis on phenomenology at high energy colliders including the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and future collider programs (ILC, CLIC, CEPC/SPPC, FCC-ee/hh, muon colliders). Their work covers Standard Model phenomenology, especially Higgs boson physics (exotic decays, Electroweak Phase Transition and Baryogenesis, Effective Field Theory), Beyond Standard Model physics (Supersymmetry, Dark Matter, Long-Lived Particles, Heavy Resonances), and simplified models. They also develop innovative small-scale experiments searching for exotic particles such as dark photons, axion-like particles, and millicharged particles.
Recent publications reveal a strong focus on muon collider physics, Higgs boson precision measurements, dark matter detection techniques, and Standard Model extensions. Dr. Liu's work demonstrates growing interest in quantum sensing applications for fundamental physics, particularly through the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center, where they explore novel detection methods for axions and other exotic particles.
Among scientific achievements, Dr. Liu has been awarded the prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2024-2026), recognizing their exceptional contributions to theoretical particle physics. Their research is supported by significant grants from the U.S. Department of Energy and Fermil National Accelerator Laboratory.
Dr. Liu serves as Principal Investigator for multiple major research projects including the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center, and the "Discovering Elusive Dynamics Across Frontiers" project. They are actively accepting PhD students and collaborate extensively with researchers across the United States and internationally on cutting-edge particle physics research.
As a key contributor to the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center, Dr. Liu works with a multidisciplinary team exploring quantum sensing applications for fundamental physics. They also participate in major international collaborations including the CEPC (Circular Electron Positron Collider) project and the International Muon Collider Collaboration, contributing to the future of high-energy physics research.
