Zhao Lin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the School of Dentistry, Virginia Commonwealth University, where his research focuses on regenerative strategies for periodontal and peri-implant tissues through extracellular vesicle therapy and tissue engineering.
His academic credentials include:
- M.M.Sc. and Certificate in Periodontology from Harvard University (2013)
- Ph.D. in Oral Health Sciences from the University of Michigan (2010)
- M.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Peking University (2004)
- B.D.S. from Peking University (2001)
Dr. Lin's laboratory pioneers novel tissue engineering approaches targeting periodontal and peri-implant regeneration. Core investigations center on extracellular vesicle therapy for soft/hard tissue regeneration around teeth and implants, complemented by research into peptide/protein delivery systems and stem cell-based therapies. This work bridges molecular mechanisms with clinical applications to combat periodontal disease and enhance dental implant integration.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications (2015-2024) reveals three dominant research thrusts: (1) extracellular vesicle biology in periodontal regeneration and bone metabolism, particularly exosome/matrix vesicle functions in miRNA regulation and tissue repair; (2) epigenetic mechanisms in periodontal inflammation, with therapeutic targeting of BET proteins and histone acetylation; and (3) translational tissue engineering through consensus development on regenerative approaches. His work spans basic science (chondrocyte vesicle studies) to clinical applications (stem cell exosome therapies).
The Lin laboratory operates within VCU's Philips Institute for Oral Health Research, employing advanced cell biology and molecular techniques to develop next-generation regenerative solutions for periodontal diseases.
