Zhan Mallory Xinyu is a Ph.D candidate in Environment and Sustainable Development at the Geneva Tsinghua Initiative (University of Geneva) and a researcher specializing in citizen engagement within global environmental movements. She concurrently serves as an advisor to the SDG Lab at UN Geneva, leveraging her expertise in sustainable development frameworks.
Her academic credentials include:
- Master’s Degree in Development Studies from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID)
- B.A. in Economics and Women’s Studies from Agnes Scott College
Her research investigates the transformative role of citizens and consumers in environmental initiatives, particularly zero-waste movements, through community-based participatory methodologies. Under Professor Marlyne Sahakian’s supervision, her doctoral thesis examines how grassroots participation drives systemic change in global environmental governance. Her work bridges theoretical analysis of sustainable consumption with practical NGO collaboration in climate action.
Professionally, she brings extensive UN experience from UNDP and UNICEF roles focused on partnership development and resource mobilization, complemented by her Oak Foundation work managing climate finance portfolios for Global South environmental NGOs.
She operates at the intersection of academic research and policy implementation through the Geneva Tsinghua Initiative and UN Geneva’s SDG Lab, emphasizing participatory approaches to sustainability challenges.
