Zeus Mateos-Fierro is an entomology researcher specializing in sustainable agricultural practices. He completed his PhD in Environmental Science at the University of Worcester, investigating the use of wildflower strips in cherry orchards to enhance pollination and reduce pests. His work demonstrated increased cherry yields and reduced pest populations without pesticides, leading to industry adoption by Berry Gardens and collaboration with Waitrose. Post-PhD, he joined a company in Reading focused on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), developing the Sterile Insect Technique using X-ray sterilization to control pests. His research bridges ecological sustainability and agricultural efficiency.
Zeus holds a Master’s and undergraduate degree in Spain before working as an entomology assistant at NIAB EMR. His current role applies cutting-edge IPM strategies to reduce pesticide reliance, collaborating internationally on projects like a global review of sweet cherry pollination. Supervised by Dr. Duncan Westbury at Worcester, his PhD leveraged partnerships with industry leaders to translate research into practical agricultural solutions.
