Professor Zengxi (Stephen) Pan is a leading academic in industrial robotics, wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), and Industry 4.0 at the University of Wollongong. He holds a PhD from Stevens Institute of Technology (2005) and degrees from Tsinghua University (B.S. 1998, M.S. 2000). As a Professor in the School of Mechanical, Materials, Mechatronic and Biomedical Engineering, he leads research in WAAM, automated offline programming, and robotics, with over 190 publications and 16,000 Google Scholar citations. His work has driven significant impacts on Australian manufacturing and defense, earning awards like the National Innovation Award (2015) and the Eureka Prize (2013).
Research focuses include WAAM process optimization, machine learning for manufacturing, and alloy development. He supervises 14 HDR students and leads projects worth AU$6+ million for organizations like DMTC and RMCRC. Editorial roles include associate editorships for the Journal of Manufacturing Processes and IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters. Current teaching includes courses on robotics, control systems, and mechanical design.
