Zbigniew Szyguła

Professor Zbigniew Szyguła is the head of the Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Physical Education in Krakow, where he also works as a physician in the sports medicine clinic and serves as a regional consultant. With a career spanning several decades, he has established himself as a leading figure in sports medicine and exercise physiology.

Prof. Szyguła graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical University of Krakow in 1977 and the Academy of Physical Education in Krakow in 1978. He completed his doctorate in 1983, researching the effects of physical exercise on the erythrocytic system, and earned his habilitation in 2010. His medical specializations include general rehabilitation (1984) and sports medicine (1988).

His research interests span multiple domains within sports science, with particular focus on sports medicine, exercise physiology, cryotherapy applications, hematology related to exercise, metabolic disorders, and oxidative stress responses. His work often examines how different populations respond to physical stressors under various environmental conditions.

Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on hypoxic training, cryotherapy effects on metabolic and inflammatory markers, and exercise physiology in specialized populations. His research frequently investigates gender differences in physiological responses and the application of novel therapeutic approaches in sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Throughout his career, Prof. Szyguła has completed numerous international research internships, including at the Medizinische Hochschule in Hannover, McMaster University, and the Free University in Brussels. He has also published over 150 original papers, review articles, and book chapters, demonstrating his significant contribution to the field.

His work extends beyond research to practical applications, including co-founding the journal Medicina Sportiva in 1997, which has gained recognition with a 6-point ranking from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. His international perspective, gained through research visits to multiple countries, enriches his approach to sports medicine and exercise science.
