Zane Griffin Talley Cooper is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Digital Media and Film at St. Lawrence University. His research focuses on the intersections of technology and the environment, particularly the material relationships between data infrastructures, energy production, and resource extraction in the Arctic region. He holds a PhD in Communication from the University of Pennsylvania and multiple graduate degrees in communication and history.
Cooper's work examines environmental media, critical infrastructure studies, and multimodal research methods. His projects explore digital waste streams, blockchain energy consumption, and rare earth mining impacts. He received a $212,000 grant from the Internet Society Foundation for the 'Geographies of Digital Wasting' multimedia exhibition.
He teaches courses including Introduction to Digital Media & Film and Environmental Media, emphasizing critical infrastructure analysis and production skills. Cooper serves as a Research Affiliate with the Data & Society Research Institute's Climate, Technology, and Justice Group.
