Zalan Bognar is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary. He is a distinguished historian specializing in 20th century Hungarian history, with particular expertise in World War II, prisoner-of-war camps, deportations, and forced migrations. Bognar also serves as president of the International Society of Gulag and Gupvi Researchers, demonstrating his leadership in this specialized field of historical research.
Bognar earned his MA in history-geography from József Attila University in 1990 and completed his PhD in historical science at Eötvös Loránd University in 2007. His doctoral dissertation focused on 'Hungarians in captivity in Hungary. Hungarian prisoner-of-war concentration camps in the light of domestic sources 1944-1945,' establishing the foundation for his subsequent research career.
Bognar's research spans multiple dimensions of 20th century Hungarian history, with special emphasis on the two world wars and their aftermath. His work extensively examines forced migrations, gulag systems, prisoner-of-war experiences, and civilian deportations under Soviet occupation. Beyond military history, Bognar has made significant contributions to understanding 20th century political, social, economic, and lifestyle history of Hungary, historical geography, research methodology, and Hungarian Protestant cultural history. His interdisciplinary approach combines archival research with oral history methods to reconstruct the experiences of victims of political repression and forced labor systems.
Bognar's publications reveal a consistent focus on the human dimension of historical trauma, particularly how individuals and communities coped with the massive deportations and forced labor systems implemented by the Soviet Union after WWII. His work on the 'malenkij robot' (small work) deportations has been particularly influential in bringing attention to this understudied aspect of Hungarian history.

- Hungarian Historical Society (Member)
- Tolstoy Society for Hungarian-Russian Cooperation (Founding Member)
As an academic mentor, Bognar has supervised numerous doctoral students whose research continues to expand our understanding of 20th century Hungarian history. His EACEA project from 2008-2009 on civilian internment for 'Malenkij robot' in the Soviet Union demonstrates his commitment to collaborative international research. Bognar frequently participates in and organizes international conferences on Soviet deportations and gulag systems, contributing to the global scholarly dialogue on these topics.
Bognar maintains active research connections with institutions across Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in regions affected by the deportations he studies. His work bridges academic research with public history, ensuring that the experiences of deportation victims remain part of contemporary historical consciousness.
