Dr. Zainab Alwani is the Founding Director and first Associate Professor of Islamic Studies at Howard University School of Divinity (HUSD). She chairs the Master of Arts (Religious Studies) program at HUSD and holds a Ph.D. in Islamic Sciences and Jurisprudence from the International Islamic University in Malaysia. Her research focuses on Islamic legal theory (maqāṣid al-Shariah), women and family relations, and Quranic methodologies. She is the editor of the Journal of Islamic Faith and Practice and serves as Vice-Chair of the Fiqh Council of North America, the first female jurist in its history.
Her work includes projects like the Orphan Care Project and groundbreaking publications on family law, interfaith dialogue, and gender equity. She has developed curricula for Islamic studies programs at HUSD, NOVA, and Johns Hopkins University. Her recent research examines foster care systems, ethical paradigms in the Quran, and justice frameworks in modern Muslim communities.
Dr. Alwani’s academic contributions span over 20 books and peer-reviewed articles, including Alusra fi Maqasid al Sharia (2013) and What Islam Says about Domestic Violence (2003). Her articles address contemporary challenges such as family dynamics, legal methodologies for minorities, and orphan welfare. She emphasizes holistic approaches to Islamic scholarship, linking classical texts to modern societal needs.
