Zachary Michael Jack is a Professor of English at North Central College, specializing in creative writing, literary journalism, and American history. He holds a B.A. from Iowa State University (1996) and an M.F.A. from the University of Alabama (2001). His work spans fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and drama, with over two dozen published books including award-winning biographies, agrarian essays, and YA novels. He is a national board member of the Midwest History Association, affiliated with the National New Play Network, and a member playwright at the Playwrights' Center.
Jack’s research focuses on place-based education, rural America, and historical activism. His notable works include Rosalie Gardiner Jones and the Long March for Women’s Rights (2020), An Education in Place (2020), and Countryside Views (2019). His plays, such as Votes for Women!, explore historical themes through theater. He has received national recognition for his writing, including the Prentice Hall Prize and Foreword Reviews honors.
Jack’s articles and op-eds appear in Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and academic journals. He advocates for higher education reform through place-conscious policies and rural advocacy. His recent projects include a 2024 biography of Ignatius Donnelly and a textbook on creative writing techniques for digital media.
