Zachary David Blount is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Microbiology, Genetics, & Immunology at Michigan State University, where he uses long-term bacterial evolution experiments to study fundamental questions in evolutionary biology. He is also an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at University College London in the field of European & International Social & Political Studies.
Blount's research focuses on evolutionary contingency, investigating how historical events shape evolutionary trajectories. His work primarily centers on the Long-Term Evolution Experiment (LTEE), a decades-long study tracking Escherichia coli evolution over 75,000+ generations. This model system allows direct exploration of how chance and necessity interact in evolution, particularly through innovations like aerobic citrate utilization and their downstream ecological and phenotypic consequences.
His recent publications highlight evolutionary innovations in E. coli under novel resource environments. These studies connect laboratory evolution to broader principles in evolutionary biology, emphasizing how repurposed genetic material creates "jury-rigged" solutions with cascading effects on fitness and ecological interactions.
Blount has also served as a visiting professor at Kenyon College, where he developed the course "Not Just Darwin" exploring the historical and philosophical dimensions of evolutionary theory. He actively mentors students, including Claire Spender and Max Halliday, who presented poster sessions on resource fitness dynamics in the Cit+ lineage.
His lab (blount-lab.org) integrates experimental evolution, genomic analysis, and philosophical inquiry to address how history shapes life's diversity. Blount's outreach includes appearances on science podcasts like Knowledge Archives and Plain Reading, emphasizing the importance of scientific communication beyond academic journals.
