Yves Schoonjans is a Professor in architectural history and theory at the Department of Architecture, KU Leuven, Belgium. His research focuses on recent architectural history and informal discourses, with two primary lines of inquiry: (1) the interplay between architectural theory and contemporary practices, and (2) everyday local identity, urban development, and spatial appropriation. He co-founded the ARP Research Group (Architectural Culture of the Recent Past) in 2009 and the Urban Projects, Collective Spaces and Local Identities group in 2013. These initiatives explore architecture as a cultural phenomenon and its societal impacts.
His work bridges theoretical analysis with empirical studies of urban environments, emphasizing how architectural discourses shape and reflect cultural and spatial transformations. Schoonjans actively participates in international academic events, such as the ACHS 2016 conference, where he contributed to sessions on heritage dynamics and urban heritage policies.
Research interests include critical heritage studies, post-colonial heritage, and the role of built environments in mediating collective memory and identity. He advocates for interdisciplinary approaches to urban challenges, integrating perspectives from architecture, sociology, and cultural studies.
