Professor Yusuf SEVGİLER is a faculty member at Adiyaman University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Biology, where he has served as Professor since 2019. Previously, he held positions as Associate Professor (2013-2019) and Assistant Professor (2007-2013) at the same institution. His academic journey began as a Research Assistant at Çukurova University's Graduate School of Sciences, Department of Biology from 1999 to 2007 while completing his Master's degree. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Professor SEVGİLER has held several administrative roles including Head of Department (since 2012), Deputy Head of Department (2012-2021), and Deputy Director of the Research and Application Center (2019).
Professor SEVGİLER's research spans multiple areas of toxicology and biochemistry. His primary research interests include:
- Environmental and aquatic toxicology, particularly studying pesticide and heavy metal effects on aquatic organisms
- Oxidative stress mechanisms and cellular responses to toxicants
- Molecular mechanisms of drug-induced toxicity, especially cardiotoxicity and pancreatic beta cell damage
- Hematological disorders, with focus on thalassemia and hemoglobin variants in Turkish populations
- Free radical biology and antioxidant defense systems
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on the toxicological effects of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and heavy metals, particularly using Daphnia magna as a model organism. Professor SEVGİLER frequently investigates how these substances affect antioxidant systems, osmoregulation, and cellular death pathways. His work also extends to medical applications, studying mechanisms of drug-induced toxicity in mammalian systems and potential protective strategies. The interdisciplinary nature of his research bridges environmental science, molecular biology, and clinical applications.
Professor SEVGİLER serves as a referee for numerous prestigious journals in the field of toxicology and environmental science, including the Journal of Trace Elements in Biology and Medicine, Archives of Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology, and Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology. He has also contributed to scientific literature as an editor for the book "Mitochondrial Diseases" published by InTech Open in 2018.
In addition to his research activities, Professor SEVGİLER teaches a variety of courses including Basic Toxicology, Biochemistry, Free Radicals and Their Biological Importance, Biotransformation of Xenobiotics, and Environmental Toxicology. He has supervised numerous research projects focusing on aquatic toxicology laboratory infrastructure and heavy metal analysis in local ecosystems.
