Yusuf A. Hannun, MD is the Joel Strum Kenny Professor in Cancer Research at the School of Medicine, Stony Brook University. He is based at the MART Building on Lauterbur Drive in Stony Brook, NY.
Dr. Hannun received his MD with distinction from the American University of Beirut Medical Center in Beirut, Lebanon, in Internal Medicine. He completed his fellowship in Hematology-Oncology and postgraduate training in Biochemistry at Duke University Medical Center.
His research focuses on bioactive lipids, particularly sphingolipids, and their critical roles in eukaryotic stress responses. His laboratory investigates the regulation of sphingolipid metabolism and the functions of bioactive sphingolipids such as sphingosine and ceramide. Using both human cancer cells and yeast as a model organism, his team conducts six major projects:
