Yuri Mishin is a Professor in the Physics & Astronomy Department at George Mason University. His research focuses on theoretical and computational modeling of metallic materials, with an emphasis on materials interfaces, thermodynamics, atomic diffusion, and mechanical behavior. He develops interatomic potentials and employs first-principles calculations to predict material properties. Key areas include grain boundary dynamics, interphase boundary diffusion, and the design of microstructurally stable alloys.
- Education: PhD in Solid State Physics from National University of Science and Technology MISiS, Moscow (1985)
His work addresses fundamental questions in materials science, such as interface thermodynamics, diffusion mechanisms, and the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties. Recent studies explore machine learning-enhanced interatomic potentials and the stabilization of nanocrystalline alloys through alloying. Collaborations span computational physics, materials engineering, and nanotechnology.
Research highlights include atomistic modeling of deformation in nanocrystalline materials, prediction of diffusion coefficients in carbides, and understanding phase transformations at interfaces. His findings contribute to the development of high-performance alloys for extreme environments.
