Yun Liu

Professor Yun Liu is a tenured academic and Head of the Functional Materials Research Group at the Australian National University (ANU). She holds the ARC Georgina Sweet Australian Laureate Fellowship and leads research in materials chemistry, focusing on functional materials for energy, electronics, and environmental applications. Her work spans nanomaterials, quantum materials, and photocatalysis, with over 250 publications in top-tier journals like Nature and Science.

Education & Career: BSc from Xian Jiaotong University (China), PhD in Materials Chemistry (1997). Postdoctoral fellowships at AIST (Japan) and ANU. Promoted to Professor in 2015. Awards include ARC Queen Elizabeth II and Future Fellowships.

Research Interests: Design of functional materials for energy storage/conversion (e.g., hydrogen storage, photovoltaics), nanomaterials, and defect engineering. Her group explores ferroelectric ceramics, 2D materials, and piezoelectric devices. Current projects include nanoscale-interaction strategies for advanced materials and machine learning in material discovery.

Grants & Collaborations: Leads ARC-funded projects on energy efficiency in protected cropping and low-dimensional ferroelectric materials. Collaborates with ANSTO and international institutions on neutron scattering and catalysis. Supervises over 30 PhD/Master’s students and postdocs.

Awards & Roles: President of the Australian Neutron Beam User Group (ANBUG), Chair of RACI’s Materials Chemistry Division. Recognized globally for contributions to functional materials science.
