Her research and teaching focus on the art of East Asia and Central Asia, utilizing feminist and transcultural approaches to explore identity construction through visual and material culture. She investigates how art, gender, and power intersect in medieval Asian contexts, particularly in the visual expressions of husband-and-wife joint burials in 8th-century Chang’an. Her pedagogical philosophy emphasizes global perspectives, encouraging students to analyze interconnected networks across geographic and temporal boundaries.
Yukina Zhang’s current research project examines tomb furnishings from 8th-century Chang’an, including sculptures, mural paintings, and decorative arts, to uncover how the living negotiated power through art influenced by the institution of marriage. This work bridges art history with gender studies and material culture analysis.
