Yue Li is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His research focuses on the interactions between physical environments and human societies under climate change, utilizing Earth system models, land surface models, and geospatial datasets.
Education:
- PhD in Physical Geography from Peking University (2019)
- BA in Geography from Wuhan University (2014)
His work explores tropical intact forest dynamics, land use impacts on carbon and water cycles, climate extremes, and model uncertainty reduction. Recent studies highlight deforestation-induced climate feedbacks, CO2 fertilization effects, and vegetation greening impacts on regional hydrology.
Research Trends:
- Integrates Earth system models with remote sensing for climate-vegetation interactions
- Quantifies carbon storage losses in tropical forests due to deforestation
- Investigates compound climate extremes (heatwaves, wildfires) and societal risks
- Develops frameworks for natural climate solutions and ecohydrology
Scientific Recognition:
- Finalist for the New Phytologist Tansley Medal (2024)
- Global Highly Cited Researcher (Clarivate Analytics, 2021-2024)
- Andrew Slater Award (NCAR, 2021)
Li teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in hydrology, natural climate solutions, and human-environment interactions. His lab addresses critical questions about sustainable land management and climate adaptation strategies.
