Dr. Yuanchao Fan is a Research Fellow in Harvard's Solar Geoengineering Research Program at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University, with dual affiliation in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and Harvard University Center for the Environment.
His research centers on land-atmosphere interactions and the environmental consequences of tropical land transformation, particularly rainforest conversion to oil palm plantations. Core expertise includes:
- Carbon-climate feedback mechanisms
- Land surface modeling (developer of CLM-Palm)
- Remote sensing applications for environmental monitoring
- Biogeochemical cycling in tropical ecosystems
- Hydrological parameterization in vegetation models

Currently leading project A07, he investigates spatio-temporal scaling of land-use and climate change impacts in Indonesian transformation systems using CLM-Palm for historical analysis and future projections.
