Dr. Yuan Yao is an Associate Professor of Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Systems at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE). Her research focuses on developing systems analysis tools to assess industrial systems' environmental and societal impacts, with current projects emphasizing the bioeconomy and sustainable production. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University and a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from Northeastern University (China), alongside an executive education in Management from Kellogg School of Management.
- Affiliations: Center for Industrial Ecology, Center for Green Chemistry & Green Engineering at Yale
- Roles: Associate Editor of Resources, Conservation & Recycling; collaborator with U.S. national labs, private companies, and non-profits
Her research employs interdisciplinary methods combining industrial ecology, sustainable engineering, and machine learning. Key areas include carbon sequestration, circular economy strategies, and environmental impacts of emerging technologies like biodegradable materials and mass timber products. She has received the NSF CAREER Award and recognition as a '35 Under 35' leader in chemical engineering.
- Grants & Funding: NSF Early Career Development Award-driven projects; collaborations across multiple sectors
- Labs/Teams: The Yao Lab develops analytical models to link engineering systems with economic, environmental, and social impacts
