Dr Yu Ka Wong is a Senior Lecturer in Education at the School of Social and Environmental Sustainability at the University of Glasgow. Previously, he held tenured positions as an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He holds a BA in Chinese Language and Literature, an MA in Education, and a Doctor of Education specializing in Educational Psychology. His research focuses on language and literacy studies, particularly Chinese as a second language (CSL) learners' literacy acquisition and development, emphasizing metalinguistic awareness and motivational factors.

Dr Wong's research investigates literacy acquisition in non-alphabetic scripts, using models like the Simple View of Reading (SVR). His work explores metalinguistic skills (phonological, morphological, orthographic) and their impact on CSL learners' reading, spelling, and writing. He also examines the L2 Motivational Self System's influence on language learning motivation and achievement. His studies often involve longitudinal designs and interventions targeting ethnic minority students in Hong Kong.
His recent articles address metalinguistic awareness's role in reading comprehension, motivational factors in literacy, and interventions to improve foundational literacy skills. He has led funded projects totaling over HK$3 million, focusing on CSL literacy development and ethnic minority education.
